Special effects and makeup wizard Stan Winston, who passed away on this day in 2008, is legendary for having worked on, well, everything from Jurassic Park to Terminator 2: Judgement Day to Edward Scissorhands – but it’s the Oscar-winner’s (and frequent James Cameron collaborator) fantastic creations for Aliens that I think is the most marvelous. Most memorably, the gigantic, ferocious Alien Queen, who provided us with one of the most gripping science-fiction battles in cinematic history – “Get away from her, you b***h!” – when she faced off against Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. Unfortunately for the extra-terrestial mommy, yeah, Ripley and her powerloader won the day – but I was sufficiently wowed by what this guy had conjured up. Here’s a clip with Stan talking about his Aliens creation.

Rest in peace!
