Watch Tim Burton’s amusing ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ spoof/homage from ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’

2005’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory wasn’t particularly a great adaptatiom, in fact, you may have been tempted to revisit Roald Dahl’s original children’s book to remember what a wonderful and simple story it was before Tim Burton took ahold of it and infused it with an unhealthy dose of over-the-top, candy-colored eccentricities. But it does have some memorable moments, like the one you’re about to see. I’m still not sure what to think of this completely uncalled-for sequence, because I have amazing respect for everything Stanley Kubrick and 2001: A Space Odyssey and perhaps would like it unspoiled by this weird sterile-white room full of little Oompa Loompas (who don’t look anything like Quentin Blake’s drawings, by the way) and Johnny Depp in full wacko mode. And yet, this witty and rather elaborate spoof/homage – the mysterious monolith is a bar of Willy Wonka’s best chocolate! – to one of film’s greats is worth watching. And all in good, jokey, harmless fun, so don’t get all riled up about shameless sacrilege and whatnot.
