Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire‘s Mike Newell returns with an intriguing trailer for Great Expectations.

Barry Lyndon

Jeremy Irving in Great Expectations.

I’m late to the party, yes, but I felt obliged to post this trailer up because I sincerely think there’s potential in this newest adaptation of Charles Dicken’s famous novel. Awards potential, perhaps not, but rather the potential for it to be a nice, decent film on its own. We’ll see.

War Horse‘s Jeremy Irvine looks fine, so does Holliday Grainger although she’s a newcomer for me. Ralph Fiennes appears to be typically great. Helena Bonham Carter…I’m a relatively big fan of hers, but I’m not entirely sure what she’s doing with this character of Miss Havisham. As long as she doesn’t go all gloriously bat-crazy as she did in Harry Potter and still does in her husband’s films, to our eternal amusement of course, I don’t think she’ll distract too much. That’s what folks are afraid of, no?

For some reason, the very first trailer for Great Expectations (which will play at Toronto pretty soon) released is an English-language “international” one with German subtitles. Hmm. Enjoy nevertheless and, as always, have at it in the comments below. Do you think it’s a worthy film to keep an eye out on?
